Driving rules in Dubai
Driving rules in Dubai for tourists are the same as in most western countries:
- Right driving side: If you wonder if driving in Dubai is on the left or right side of the road, remember that Dubai is right hand drive, as all continental European countries and USA.
- Seat belt: Seat belt is mandatory for all passengers, including those sitting back.
- Alcohol: Driving after having drunk alcohol is strictly prohibited.
- Child seat: Child seat is mandatory for all kids under 12 years old.
- Speed limits: Speed limits are typically 60 km/h in urban areas and 120 km/h on highways. Look out for signs as limits can vary.

Driving in Dubai with foreign license
As the city is full of travelers from abroad, the most common question regarding car hire in Dubai is whether I can drive in Dubai with US license, European license or another country’s license.
To rent a car in Dubai, you need a United Arab Emirates license or International Driving Permit (IDP). So, if you wonder if you can drive in UAE with European license, the answer is no.
The same is true regarding driving in Dubai with UK license or Indian license, US license or every country’s license except from UAE.
Is it easy to drive in Dubai?
Driving in Dubai as a tourist is generally an easy procedure, as the road infrastructure is excellent, the signage is clear and both in Arabic and English, and the roads are wide.
However, if it is your first time in Dubai and you wonder whether is it hard to drive in Dubai, please consider the following:
- Traffic is heavy during rush hours.
- Local driving may be aggressive.
- Parking is limited in popular areas in downtown.
So, driving in Dubai vs USA or European countries is similar, however we recommend you drive slowly, park in private parking areas and avoid driving early in the morning and afternoon.
